Golden Embers & Gentle Tides: A Hawaiian Escape That Stirred My Soul

There are moments in life when time seems to soften—when the days stretch long and warm, and the world invites you to slow down. My recent holiday in Hawaii was one of those rare and beautiful pauses.

Each day began with slow beach walks, barefoot on soft sand, the rhythm of the waves keeping time with our steps. The air was thick with salt and sunshine, wrapping us in warmth, both from the climate and the simple joy of just being present. With my husband by my side, we moved through our days gently, without hurry—just the way life is meant to be lived sometimes.

We swam in crystal waters, basked under the sun, and shared long conversations over fresh, local meals bursting with flavor and colour. One of the most unforgettable moments came as we snorkeled swimming alongside sea turtles—graceful, ancient creatures who seemed to glide effortlessly through life. That quiet, shared awe reminded me of how important it is to slow down and reconnect—with nature, with each other, with ourselves.

But the moment that stayed with me most was a sunset. One evening, as we sat on the beach, the sky transformed into a masterpiece. Golden embers lit the clouds, and the sun melted into the horizon in a blaze of glory. It was a sunset that didn’t just color the sky—it stirred something deep within. It moved me. It felt like the world was holding its breath, just for a moment.

When we returned to New Zealand, that memory lingered. It wouldn’t let go. I kept revisiting that sky in my mind—the warmth, the emotion, the light. And so, back in my studio, I poured that feeling onto canvas. The result was a new fantail oil painting, inspired by the glory of that Hawaiian sunset. The fantail, delicate and spirited, seemed the perfect subject—fluttering in the golden light, capturing not just a scene, but the emotion of that day. It became more than just a painting. It was a tribute to presence, to peace, to awe.

Hawaii offered us more than just a holiday. It offered space. Stillness. Time to be. And from that came not only memories, but new inspiration—proof that sometimes the most profound creativity comes when we finally give ourselves permission to breathe.
